First of all, I have to say: "2011?! I thought it was still August!"

Man, I don't feel ready for another year. The whole holiday season sort of caught me by surprise. Just feels like another day to me.

But it is a new year, with all the well-intentioned resolutions, champagne, and fireworks.

Things have started up for me, I guess. Got a call the other day about a position I had applied for, but wasn't the right fit, and they asked to bring me in for a second interview for a different position in the company. My interview is on Tuesday, so in like a week I might be making a huge life change and moving. We'll hafta see. What a way to start 2011 ~

I saw a great facebook post the other day: "Everyone's quitting something for the next year. I'm going to add something."

I thought that was cool. My goal is to be accepted into Grad School. That's it. That's all I want in 2011. 2010 was an altogether okay year. Moved from Los Angeles back to Baltimore, and freelanced. Pretty uneventful I guess haha. I'm ready for an exciting year with some big changes. Tired of feeling like I'm stuck in one place, treading water.

First of all, happy holidays! Like a good "procrasti-santa", I am still not done my Christmas shopping, go me So I'm not finding myself filled with very much Christmas spirit. I guess I'm just not mentally there yet. Going upstairs in a few minutes to wrap the presents I actually DO have.

I want to discuss something here. Not to point fingers, or to dispute, but just to see what the perception is.

Eyeballing vs. Referencing

In my experience (in-school and out), I have been taught that "eyeballing" is looking at another piece of existing drawn or painted or illustrated artwork, and "copying" it line for line, stroke for stroke. Little changes here and there may say to an artist, "Oh I've made this original because of those changes", even though the picture is still very true to the essence of the original. Basically, you're taking someone else's pre-made choices and making them YOUR choices without a deeper understanding of what you're doing or why you're doing it. The work is essentially done for you by someone else, and you're taking credit for it.

Here's where referencing is different, in my opinion. Referencing means that you are making a drawing based on a photograph, or several photographs. You're taking something that exists in real life and making your OWN choices on how to translate that visual information into a different medium. I know many artists (myself included) that use single photos for anatomy studies. When doing larger works that I submit elsewhere, I will use a variety of found stock photos, self-taken reference photos, and life drawings to keep my image accurate. But for personal studies of understanding how the body works, I feel it is completely fine to use a photo. Especially if that photo is listed under the Resources and Stock section of dA. As much as I would love love love to work exclusively with live models for all of my studies and drawings, neither I nor any other artist that I know of is fortunate enough to have them at our fingertips, or at our beck and call.

So if what I've just defined as "referencing" is suddenly deemed, "eyeballing", I would say that 90% of the artists I know personally and know of are suddenly "eyeballers", "copycats", essentially degrading and cheapening our work by using photos to help us understand our subject matter when live models are not available (which is most of the time).

Your thoughts? Am I totally crazy or off-base? Or is my fever just back and I'm hallucinating that someone just accused me of eyeballing a referenced photo for my own study?

Hi there little birdies ~

I feel like it's been awhile since I updated! I guess it has been - doh!

I hope everyone is gearing up for the holidays; I know I am. Starting tomorrow I am working super extra hard to bust out a killer new batch of Holiday Ornaments for my Etsy Shop [link], since the last ones are um, gone. /fistpump!

Today I had quite a fright. My poor little fluffy white dog Rufus got up this morning and came out of his crate covered in throw up and yucky poo poo. Naturally, I was like, "Bawwwww okayyy bathtime" and took him upstairs to get him cleaned up. He was shaking so violently, and I knew he still didn't feel well, poor little buddy. Got him cleaned up, dried off, and then locked him in the kitchen with me to do work. After awhile, I started to notice him acting really strange. He started swaying side to side and his little arms locked up and he couldn't walk. I started to take him outside to go to the bathroom, but once we got into our mudroom (icky room we leave our shoes and stuff in), he started going crazy. He kept falling over, and scurrying across the ground, running into things. Then he'd fall over on his back and convulse violently. I was so scared for my little buddy, so I scooped him up and called the animal hospital. To make a long story less long, my little doggy had a seizure today They say that he was acting all strange because he temporarily went blind, and lost control of his motor functions, and got scared, so he just started to run. I'm glad I picked him up when I did or he could've really hurt himself. Unfortunately he's at the point in life where he could (and probably has) developed epilepsy. So we've gotta watch him and mark his behaviour, but my heart just went out to my puppy. I neglected my work and snuggled him for the rest of the day.

Aside from a little scare, things are going alright. I've been updating my blog [link] regularly in case anyone's interested, and I've been applying for quite a few jobs. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I feel like it's been awhile since I did a proper update. Hello. How are you? It's 2am and I'm terrible at going to bed, so here: have a lovely little update.

Time seems to be flying by. Does anyone else feel this way? I can't believe that next week is Thanksgiving. Fall is a beautiful time of year, and we're having surprisingly mild weather here in good old MD. I've been trekking up to Philadelphia for this and that, to visit friends and family and for an interview.

Speaking of, the interview went well - thanks for all of the lovely and heart-warming comments and notes you guys left me! I haven't heard anything back yet, but I feel pretty positive. We'll see!

How is everyone? Things are pretty decent here... can't complain. The leaves are finally changing, which is making me happy I love fall colours - I missed them in LA last year! I'm super excited for Halloween - my mom and I tag-teamed my 10 year old sister's lifesize cupcake costume - it came out pretty spectacular, if I do say so myself. My own costume has been somewhat of a misadventure, however. Do you know how hard it is to find a Pocahontas costume? I totally can't make that from scratch lol

Just a little update. I'll be gone for the weekend, up to my college to celebrate Homecoming with my wonderful girlfriends. It's a welcome respite from a lot of stuff that has been going on.

Truth be told, I've been in a big art slump lately, and it's been incredibly frustrating for me. I know I owe people commissions, and I know you've been waiting, but I am trying my very hardest to get back on the horse so that I don't give you shitty art. Thanks for being so patient.

Hey guys,

Been having a bit of rough patch with the direction of my art, and I think it's time for a fresh start for me. I must say this: ultimately I make art because it makes me happy, I do not make art to earn anyone's seal of personal approval.

You guys have been so supportive of me in both my small successes and many moments of failure, and I want to say here and now that I am so appreciative of the feedback I receive. I mean this truly and genuinely. Thank you for the words that have helped improve my work, and I encourage you to continue to share with me my weaknesses and strengths so that I can continue to work and gain a better understanding. This is my lifeblood, without it I cannot see my weaknesses to work to turn them into strengths.

Like I said, I need a fresh start and I think I have found it. You guys have been awesome, and I am currently finding so many helpful people that I need to direct my attention to, who, like you guys, have a ton of advice and insight to offer me. This is where I need to invest my energy.

Hi friends ~

So lately I've really been taking a hard look at some of the artists I really admire on here. And among the waves of inspiration I get from staring in awe at their work, I have intense feelings of humility about my own. I believe it's a great thing to be proud of the work that you do, to see the things you did well; but I believe it's a greater thing to then step back and see where it could be even better.

I guess I feel like I've been hitting a wall lately. I see others' work and I say to myself, "One day I want to be there". And I see what I have to do. My brain goes, "Oh, I need to do that", but for some reason, I feel like my hands don't have enough understanding to produce the results I want. I know it's there, I know I'm scratching the surface, but I feel like I just haven't been about to break through and really DO IT.

I guess this is where my grad school aspirations come in. I'm sure many of you can relate when I talk about the gut-feeling, that you HAVE to understand how to do something; that you have the potential, you just have to dig a little deeper.

Ahhh, I'm sure this is all very vague, but I guess I just don't know how to talk about it any other way. It's a deep desire to really IMPROVE, to move into consistently creating better pieces. I hope I get there one day.
